 Why do I need these courses?

Coast Guard Regulations – Effective April 1, 1999

• In certain conditions, operators of powered vessels are required to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator's Card showing proof of competency and to carry it with them at all times while operating a powered boat.

• Introduction of new regulations regarding operators of pleasure boats fitted with a motor and used for recreational purposes.

• If you were born after March 31, 1983, you had to show proof of operator competency by September 15, 1999

• If you operate a power boat less than 4 metres (13.2 feet), you have to show proof of operator competency by September 15, 2002 (including PWC operators)

• All other power-boat operators must show proof by September 15, 2009

• Also effective April 1, 1999* - if you are under 12 years of age, and not directly supervised**, you will not be able to operate a power-driven boat of more than 10hp. If you are over 12, but under 16, and not directly supervise**, you will not be able to operate a power-driven boat more than 40 hp.

• You must be 16 or older to operate a personal watercraft

* These requirements apply in areas outside the Northwest and Nunavut Territories at this time.

** Directly supervised means accompanied and directly supervised in the boat by a person 16 years of age or older.
